Jailbreaking the iPhone means getting rid of all the limitations that are imposed by Apple on your iPhone. It allows you to modify your iPhone the way you want, install third party software and applications that are otherwise not approved by Apple iTunes and unlock your iPhone so you can use it with wireless carriers such as T-Mobile. But you lose the warranty and are on your own once you jailbreak your iphone; Apple won’t support your device. First jailbreak tool for iPhone was released on July 10, 2007 as a way to use custom ringtones that was available in default settings. Since then many new hacks and jailbreak has been released as new iPhone OS and firmwares such as iPhone 2.0 and iPhone 3G were released. Always back up your iPhone before attempting to jailbreak or do anything with it.
Now the first ever jailbreak tool for latest iPhone 3GS is available for free download. It is released by the same 19 year old George Hotz, who also created jailbreak tool for first original iPhones. The free tool for jailbreaking iPhone 3Gs is known as Purplera1n. As of right now, you can download and use it only on Windows PC with latest iTunes 8.2 along with iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Expect to see different versions for Mac soon. Interesting thing is that the binary code size of PurleA1N is smaller the the C++ programming code for Hello World. And there won’t be any need for IPSW to download.
Should you wait to download the iPhone 3GS jailbreak tool? Many say yes because Apple will be releasing iPhone 3.1 update soon, which will most likely make this purplera1n beta software useless. That’s the reason other iPhone Dev Team members (folks behind hacking and making jailbreak tools for iPhone) haven’t released any tool yet, afraid of getting patched early with the 3.1 firmware update. Is there any other tool beside this? Yes, it is called ultrasn0w; but many say it is not working as smooth as it should in the jailbreaking process of iPhone 3gs.
